Digg John Chow's OLPC Post!

Posted by Obsidian
I submitted John Chow's entry on the Give One, Get 1 campaign from One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) to Digg.

John's had some trouble with Digg over the last year, and anything relating to him usually gets buried. However, I think this post deseves attention, and I hope others will agree.

Digg It

Stop back soon. I'll have a new post up tomorrow.

Happy Halloween

Posted by Obsidian
I hope Halloween is going well for everyone, regardless of whether or not you celebrate it. I didn't do much of anything Halloween-related this year, just followed my normal Wednesday routine with school followed by seeing Amanda for the evening. Last year, we watched Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin, but we must've forgot about it this year. Instead, we watched her new Wednesday night show, Private Practice. I think we should go Trick-or-Treating next year. I'll wear a mask and they'll never know how old I am!

I leave you with these two pumpkins my friends carved. You can call them obsessed if you must.

Halo: Uprising & other Comics

Posted by Obsidian
I've always been a big comic book fan. When I was younger, my parents bought me the Power Rangers comic series. I think it lasted 2 or three years before ending. I loved the Power Rangers, and I loved the comics. I even submitted my own monster to the editor, and it was published in the end of one of the comics. Maybe I'll scan it and post it in the future.

When I was a year or two older from that experience, I started reading heavily into X-Men comics. I became a dedicated X-Men fan up until the rise of Onslaught. While I know that comic series should change over time to keep readers interested, Onslaught just screwed the entire franchise up. This was all about 10 years ago, and I really don't even try to keep up on where things are now. Instead, I keep my eyes peeled for mini-series comics. One more recent mini-series is based on the Halo universe.

Halo: Uprising is a short comic series published by Marvel. It starts shortly after Halo 2 and runs into the events of Halo 3. It's original publishing date was pushed back, so it came out right around the time of Halo 3, rather than having the entire series out in time for Halo 3. I'm not complaining, as the video games leave us wondering what happened between the games, and I hoping the series covers everything that happened. As for the first issue, it picks up right where Halo 2 left off: onboard the forerunner ship that the Master Chief stowed away on. It should be interesting to see where the comics take us.

For anyone interested, you can pick a copy of the comic up at your local comic shop, or have one shipped to you from Amazon. Maybe I'll make a monthly entry about new and interesting comics that I come across.

Random Bookmarks

Posted by Obsidian
I started going through some of my more recent bookmarks, and some of them are amusing or atleast useful. I tend to bookmark a lot of stuff for "try this later" or "forward to person", but never delete it after I do these things. I figured I might as well share some of what I've found here.

The first bookmark is hosted at GOD MODE, a web comic. I don't read any web comics (8-bit theatre back in junior high school), but I think I found this on Digg one day. It reveals the true identity of the Master Chief from Halo. If you're really curious, read the comic.

The next bookmark is one for my aunt. This will probably be useless for most of you, but she recently purchased a Verizon internet card for her new Mac Book and wanted a way to turn it into wireless around her house. You can do this with a router or hotspot that supports PCMCIA or ExpressCards. Be warned, they are pricey! Check out the store here.

Sick of beer, but not sure what else you can order without looking like a girl? Campuse Squeeze is the place for you. They've got a great article on the top 8 manly drinks. Can't say I've tried them all. For those of you doubting that a Martini is a manly drink, look over at James Bond.

For the GIMP users out there, there's a great new plug-in called the "liquid rescale" that resizes your images while retaining better quality. The plug-in utilizes "content aware image rescaling". It's primarily meant for shrinking images without losing important parts, but I'd be interested in seeing how it fairs enlarging images as well.

The last "new" bookmark I made was the Press Start Movie. It's a ridiculous amateur-looking film done in classic-RPG style. You'll have to watch the trailer to get a good idea of it. As ridiculous as it looks, I'm planning on getting a copy for my personal amusement. You should as well.
